The Colosseum and The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Colosseum

*Built in 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian and finished in 80 AD, after Vespasian died.
*Its 188m by 156m and over 48 meters high (159 feet)It could hold about 55,000 people that can enter in over 80 different entrances
*The first level of seating held people with the most money
*The second level of seating held people that had a lot of money but not enough for first level. 
*The third level was the middle class people
*And the fourth level held the women and lower class people
*Below ground was where the animals were kept. There was cages that could hoist animals up into the middle of the Arena 
*The first time the building was used was by Vespasian's successor, Titus, for the hundred day games. During those hundred days over 9,000 animals were killed.  
*In 847 AD there was an Earthquake that ruined the southern side of the Colosseum. The ruins were used to build other monuments. Like the St. Peter's Basilica.


The Leaning Tower of Pisa

*Built in 1174 by Bonanno Pisano, but he stopped building after the third story was done because it started sinking into the ground on one side. 
*90 years later it was finished by Giovanni di Simone, Tommano Simone (son of Andreo Pisano).
*To climb to the top you have to go up 294 stairs
*It is of Romanesque Style, today it is more known as Gothic Style. 
*The Tower is still sinking about 1 mm a year. 
*During WWII Nazis were using the Tower as an observation post
