Roman Architecture

Public Baths and Roman Lighthouses

Public Baths

*The Roman Baths that are most famous are actually in Bath, England
*They were built in 1894 and finished in 1897
*There are four areas to the building: The Sacred Spring, The Roman Temple, The Roman Bath House and The Museum
*The actual Roman Baths took over 300 years to build...they were built during the time of Emperor Claudius
*The Hot Springs, now days called The Sacred Spring, was formed when it rained on the hills, Mendip Hills.
*After it rained the water would sink into the ground and run down the hills. Eventually it would get enough and then it would rise up, when it would spill over the ground it formed "pond" type areas that had hot water.
*The Romans found it and used it as a place to bath, and they also used to as drinking water.

Roman Lighthouses

*The Dover Lighthouse (the picture to the left) was part of a castle that was built in 200 A.D.
*Was part of a pair but the other lighthouse was destroyed in an Earthquake
*These lighthouses guided ships into Dover Port from the mainland Europe
*The Tower of Hercules (picture at the bottom) was built before the second century a.d. in northwestern Spain

*The Tower of Hercules is actually still in use
*It was rehabilitated in 1791
*People say that the Tower of Hercules is the second most important lighthouse in Spain after the Faro De Chipiona
