Roman Architecture

Arches and Columns

Arches

*Arches were built to honor great people, by the end of Roman Empire over 40 arches were built, but the first Arches were used to build bridges and aqueducts*Most of those arches are still standing today. Most of the arches were built at the entrance to the Forums, along major roads, or in monumental places.
*The arch of Septimius Severus was built in 203 A.D. This arch is located in Roman Forum.
*Romans used Arches for support of their buildings and for the decoration that it added to the cities.

Columns

*Rome isn't the only empire to use columns, but most people think of Rome when someone says Ancient Columns.
*Columns like Arches were used for support and decoration.
*Romans had at least 5 different styles of Columns: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite.
*Most of those columns were different styles of Greek columns.
*Also all of those styles are still used today for support and decoration.
*Eventually Americans also copied the Roman columns, just like they did to the greeks.
*Tuscan columns are the most basic and they were meant to be used in gardens for the most part but they ended up using them a lot when money was tight. *Doric columns are used for bigger rectangular buildings.
*Ionic columns are used on educational building for the most part.
*Corinthian columns are flowery and are used to show artistic designs and buildings.
*Composite columns are mostly seen on building that they use for celebrations.
